The Red Hook ESL Center is a drop-in center for residents of Red Hook and its surrounding communities run by Bard students and community volunteers. We provide English as a Second Language classes to non-native English speakers twice a week. The project seeks to create a comfortable learning environment for community members who might feel isolated by their limited English proficiency. By providing them with language skills we support their efforts to participate in both the local community and the larger American society with greater confidence and knowledge. At the same time, the center creates a space in which students and tutors build relationships with members of their community whom they otherwise might not meet.
The ESL Center was created in 2002 by a student at Bard College as a project of the Trustee Leader Scholar program. (link to tls: http://inside.bard.edu/tls/) For more info, please contact us: firstname.lastname@example.org
